Internal R&D expenditure increased by 6.0% in 2017 and reached 14,052 million euros, 1.20% of GDP

The National Statistics Institute (INE) has announced that Spain's internal R&D expenditure amounted to 14,052 million euros in 2017, representing a 6% increase over the previous year. This expenditure represented 1.20% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), compared to 1.19% in 2016.

In 2017, all Autonomous Communities increased their expenditure in internal R&D, as compared with the previous year. Those that registered the highest growth rates were Illes Balears (19.6%), Galicia (13.3%) and Principado de Asturias (13.0%). In turn, the smallest increases occurred in Aragón (0.8%), Cantabria (2.9%) and País Vasco (3.6%).
